How to Get Paid $30,000 a Year to Travel*
*Without Selling Anything

by Craig Chilton

Author's Description --

This is the ONLY Guidebook that has ever been published to enable people to obtain and enjoy the World's Great "Sleeper" Travel Job.

Currently in its updated 1998-thru-mid-2000 Version (which came off the press in March, 1998), this 8-1/2" x 11", 352-page book is the complete handbook and guide to the unique job (and lifestyle) of delivering brand-new recreational and specialty vehicles from theirthousands of manufacturing and modification sites to the dealerships and customers.

Think about this: You never see anything but cars, pickup trucks, and minivans being transported on trucks. That's because nearly ALL of the other types of vehicles are driven to their dealerships or customers -- which frequently lie hundreds, or even thousands of miles from their manufacturing sites. And most of those vehicles are driven by ordinary people who come from all walks of life... not by truck drivers. Examples include new ambulances, hearses, bread trucks, UPS vans, school busses, and even limousines -- and much more. And nearly all of the hundreds of thousands of recreational vehicles (RVs) that are manufactured annually.

It takes a large workforce to do this -- over 100,000 drivers in North America alone, working for 3,500 U.S. companies, and 330 companies in Canada. The current edition is double the length of the previous one, and explains in detailall of the useful tips and aspects of this job that I've learned since entering it myself in 1977. I was a schoolteacher then, and took this as a summer job. But right from the start. it never seemed like a "job." I enjoyed it so much, I never went back to teaching. I spent the next 10 years doing this work full-time... and it always was like being paid to do a favorite hobby!

Drivers who do this may choose to work full-time, part-time, seasonally, occasionally, or on-call-as-needed. Over 10,000 of them (or about 10% of the entire workforce) even have regular jobs during the week, and do this just on weekends, earning $100-300/week of supplemental income. (By the way, the book's title reflects what I was earning when I wrote its first edition, in 1979. The last 6 years that I did this full-time, my earnings were $52,000/year.)

The last half of the book provides a complete listing of all 4,000 potential employers in the USA, Canada, and Australia. Provided in these are the company names, addresses, phone, FAX, and toll-free numbers, contact person names, and the types of vehicle(s) made or modified at each site.

The following percentages overlap: 40% of the driver workforce is comprised of couples, and 30% of the drivers are between the ages of 65 and 80... which makes this perhaps the world's most senior-friendly job in terms of access, wages, and enjoyable, and stress-free work. (The other two-thirds of the drivers are between 18 and 64.)

One last point: Separately from wages (which are paid by the mile; 33 cents/mile (expressed in US funds, are the quivalent elsewhere) is typical take-home pay), drivers receive non-taxable expense money which pays for outbound fuel, and the airplane ticket back home. And by airline rules, he or she who gets on the plane gets the frequent flier miles... and I've been to Europe and Asia 10 times that way! If you love to travel, you'll never find better way to do it than this!

The Rver's Bible: Everything You Need to Know About Choosing, Using, and Enjoying Your RV

by Kim Baker & Sunny Baker

Review:
From Booklist, April 15, 1997 --
In this perky repository of RV (i.e., recreational vehicle) info, precious little is said of such plebeian concerns as fuel efficiency. Rather, the Bakers emphasize enjoying life once you have cast the die for such a gas-and-road hog. Oh, frugality is a concern, but mostly in the chapters on buying your land yacht and keeping it in running trim.

Commonsense nuggets appear throughout (e.g., "Ask for discounts on extended stays"), and the Bakers strive to advise on such mundane operating matters as checking air pressure in the inside tire on a "dually," as well as on larger lifestyle issues, such as what the various "classes" of RVs offer in shower space and the all-important walk-room. So doing, they successfully provide a highly readable, comprehensive, and well-organized one-stop resource on practically any concern RVers might have. This could be the classic RVer's sourcebook. -- Mike Tribby

RVing Basics

by Bill & Jan Moeller

Review:

Travel Editor's Recommended Book --
The sun wanes, the night lengthens, and RV catalogs bestrew the house. If your time is flexible, and the weather is cold, autumn is the time to think about RVing it to pleasanter climes. Whether you're new to the game or a veteran traveler, the Moellers' RV guide can ease the planning sessions. They help chose an appropriate RV, discuss interior options, and offer advice on selecting RV campground sites. They cover readying RVs for travel, driving them, using campground hookups, cleaning, and maintenance. The advice is practical but not condescending, and the less time you spend diddling over propane systems insurance, the sooner you can be on the road, by the lake, or parked in your favorite desert.

Living Aboard Your RV : A Guide to the Fulltime Life on Wheels

by Janet & Gordon Groene

Reader review provided to Amazon. Tom G. Offer wrote:

An Excellent "Bang for your Buck!"

Most excellent material, taking you from the first urges of fulltiming to the 'End of the Road'. As a Canadian, I didn't get the Canadian perspective of many of the topics, but of course for that I would have to read a book written by Canadian authors. The universal areas covered were done so in the most professonal manner and down to Earth. Many good and timely suggestions from choosing your Home on Wheels, managing money, mini-hobbies, housecleaning, security and of course repairs and maintenance. A terrificly good read!
