CDL Calculator

Do you need a CDL?

No. Not unless you plan to drive vehicles similar to the ones shown above. The good news is that around 95% of the brand-new vehicles that are delivered by Road Rats fall outside of the regulations of the Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) that necessitate holding a Commercial Driver's License -- the CDL.

Unless a company happens to want its drivers to have CDLs, there is no need for a driver to obtain or possess one, as far as the government is concerned, when delivering recreational vehicles, regardless of type.

I'll repeat that, for emphasis. If you drive recreational vehicles (RVs), you don't need a CDL, no matter how large or heavy it may be, with the exception of the luxury bus conversions. (Oddly enough, though, when a person happens to be the owner of a luxury bus conversion, he is not required to have a CDL. As Paul Harvey might say -- "Isn't that a strange?")  In addition, nearly all of the specialty vehicles that weigh less than the average Greyhound bus also may be driven legally without a CDL.

Here is how to tell if the state requires you to have a CDL, for the type of vehicle you seek to drive. Envision the vehicle, and put it to this test. (Red answers are best, for those not having, nor desiring to obtain, a CDL.)

CDL Calculator
(1)   Does the vehicle or combination of vehicles have a manufacturer's weight
        rating (GVWR) over 26,000 lbs.?
If NO, skip down to #4.
       If YES, continue to #2.
(2)   Is the vehicle a combination vehicle towing a unit over 10,000 lbs. GVWR?
If YES -- you need a Class A CDL.
       If NO, continue to #3.
(3)    Does the single vehicle have a GVWR over 26,000 lbs.?
If YES -- you need a Class B CDL.
       If NO, continue to #4.
(4)    Is the vehicle designed to carry 16 or more people (including the driver)?
If YES -- you need a Class C CDL.
       If NO, continue to #5.
(5)    Does the vehicle require hazardous material placards or transport a
         select agent or toxin?
If YES -- you need a Class C CDL.
If NO...   you do NOT NEED a CDL.

One important note with respect to busses: a bus may be Class A, B, or C, depending on if the GVWR is over 26,000 lbs., or is a combination vehicle. And remember, for mini-busses rated for carrying fewer than 15 passengers, the D.O.T. does not require the driver to have a CDL.
